Past
Sofian's aunt was used to getting any guy that she wanted, but when the man whom would become Sofian's father didn't as much glance within her direction she was more than a little upset. Worse, the man only had eyes for her dull bookish sister. She tried everything to turn the object of her desire attention towards her, and while the effort mostly appeared in vain she did discover that her sister's new lover wasn't human and she was pregnant with his child. Both news filled her with excitement. She had always fantasized about being swept off her feet by some immortal being, and she saw her sister's unborn child as a way to endear herself to said immortal. There was just one problem--her sister. She knew that if her sister was still in the picture that any chance of success was out the window. So, she decided to remove her sister from the picture and raise her unborn child as her own. She enlisted some friends with magical abilities to transfer her sister's unborn child into her own womb, and bore Sofian as if he was biologically her own. Once the deed was completed all she had to do was wait.
Little did she know, Sofian's father wasn't coming from them. He couldn't come for something he didn't know exist. Sofian's aunt committed the horrendous act of getting rid of her sister before she managed to break the news to him. And even if he knew of his son's existence, coming for him wouldn't be an easy task. The truth was his father was trapped within the dream realm, and while he had figured out how to interact with the waking world his abiltiy to do so was limited. In fact, his aunt was unaware of the fact that her only encounter with him had been within the dream realm. Still, the fact that days turned to weeks turned to months turned to years did not alter his aunt's belief that Sofian's father was going to come from them. She told Sofian all about his father growing up. Through, he doesn't share her optimism that he will return for them. From an early age Sofian came up with the conclusion that his aunt was just a hole for his father to squirt his seed into. Over the years, there were many men whom regarded his aunt as such
She did nothing to stop them from treating her as such. One might said she encouragd it. She was known as the neighborhood's whore, and was willing to spread her legs for anyone for little next to nothing. She had more long term lovers over the years. Most of whom were assholes, but there were a few distant ones that Sofian became attached to. After awhile, he stopped getting attached to anyone that his aunt brought home. He knew it was a waste of time to care for anyone who one day he will likely never see again. Watching his aunt whore herself out and turn a blind eye to all the horrible things her long strings of lovers did to Sofian over the years wasn't the only ways that his aunt proved to be a piss poor surrogate mother. She often smack Sofian around. It was either because he asked questions about his father that she didn't like or because she blamed him for her currant flavor leaving.
From an early age, Sofian learned how to stay out of his aunt's way when she got in a certain mood. Avoiding his aunt became much easier after he met Askari within the third grade. While they both came from two different worlds they formed a friendship over their shared abilities. Askari had talents very much like his own, and they begun to spend a great deal together training these abiliites. While Sofian claims he is only joking when he says they share the same father he does wonder if there might be some truth to it.
Present
Sofian and Askari have became like brothers to each other. In fact, they have become so close that there are rumors that they are lovers circling around from narrowminded people whom finds it hard to accept that two people can have affect for each other without engaging in sex--including Sofian's aunt. Askari's grandparents, on the other hand, see their relationship for what it is. In fact they have all but offically adopted Sofian as their second grandson and they have made it perfectly clear that he welcome to stay within their home permanantly if he wished. Sofian does stay over at Askari's more often than not, but he is not ready to take the plunge of completely cutting ties with the woman he calls mother. While Askari supports his decisions there are times he clearly doesn't understand it. Truth be told, there are times Sofian doesn't understand it either and the only real explanation he has she's his mother.
